:sparkles: Book Club 55 :sparkles:
→ Reading Session: December 2025 ←
→ Review Session: January 2026 ←

Thank you again to everyone who joined in for last month’s reading session! For those who haven’t yet shared their thoughts about their book (or anyone who enjoys reading book reviews!) you still have time to do so in :memo: 54th Spells8 Book Club - Readers’ Reviews!

As of today, the 55th book club reading session has now begun !

On Your Mark, Get Set, READ! :books:

  1. Begin by announcing your book
The first post below is an editable wiki post- add your book title and name to the list! (instructions below)

  2. Know that you have [[ the whole month ]] in this reading session
While it is great if you can finish your book during this time, it is okay if you break it into chapters or sections- do as much as you can and know that doing your best is always good enough!

  3. As you’re reading, feel free to share your thoughts!
You are very welcome to share any thoughts or tidbits while you read in the comments below or in a new post in the forums. Just save the best parts for the final discussion at the end of the reading period!

  4. Join the final discussion
When the month is over, a discussion post will open encouraging all readers to share a review of their book and any personal thoughts they have about it. A mini-review is perfectly fine, and there will be a suggested format for anyone who would like to write a longer review.

A note about sharing books:

While everyone is free to choose their own book, you may consider reading along with someone else ! It is fun to share thoughts and insights about different books and even more exciting to do in-depth about a book with fellow readers :handshake:

If the book you plan to read is already on the list below, add your name to the list of others reading that book! Please keep in mind that everyone will reconvene and chat together in the Reader’s Reviews discussion, regardless of which book you read :books:

It sounds like this was an ā€˜okay’ book. At least it wasn’t a complete waste of time! I hope you got something from the book that you didn’t know before.

I’m still slowing plugging away at my book… it’s funny because I thought I’d have more time to read now that I’m on Winter Break, but that just hasn’t happened yet!

Yeah, it was okay. Just not great.

You’ll get there! You’ve been putting off stuff from around the house, probably, and you have to get that done, and get ready for Yuletide. It’s a busy time of year.

Thanks for the encouragement :pink_heart: I’m trying to make some progress on it this morning before I take my daughter to school lol but it’s been so long since I picked up this book that I feel like I have to start over

I’ve done that with books, and now that I’ve got streaming, TV series. It’s difficult to keep up sometimes!

I think part of my issue is that it’s been so long since I picked up this book that just looking at it feels like a failure  I never got through the first few chapters even, so it’s almost like it’s taunting me. I’m actually going to put that book down and pick up a different one for now and see if I can finish it, or at least make some good progress. I will come back to A Shadow Witch’s Grimoire when I have more time.

I’m starting a different one called Empath and Psychic Abilities for Beginners by Alyssa Vera. I think this is one I got from the publisher in an eBook format, so it will be easier for me to carry around and read. It’ll take the place of me picking up my phone randomly – I’ll just pick up my Kindle instead lol

At least it has a pretty cover!

That looks interesting! I hope it holds your attention better. And yeah, picking up a kindle, or even downloading Kindle on your phone, is probably better than Doomscrolling or something.

How are everyone’s books so far? Hope you’re enjoying them :books:

It’s time for a friendly reminder!

:grey_exclamation: The current reading period will end on December 31st :grey_exclamation:

A Reader’s Review post will appear in the forums at that time for everyone to share their thoughts and hear all about what your fellow coven members have been reading.

I’m looking forward to hearing about your books- happy reading! :open_book: :sparkles:

Ehhh it’s okay – there’s a lot of fluff in here that I don’t think is necessary, such as breaking empaths down into very specific categories: food empath, animal empath, etc. I also feel like, as with most empath books, it doesn’t quite get being an empath correct

There’s a difference between having empathy and being an empath. The way parts of the book are written seem to conflate the two. You can have empathy while not being an empath, but you can’t be an empath without empathy.

Here’s an example of a passage that blurs the lines between empathy and being an empath.

But empathy is more than just sensing the emotions of others. It is also an invitation to truly listen, to offer a safe space for people to express themselves authentically. When we approach others with an open heart and a willingness to understand, we create a sacred container for their experiences. Through empathy, we forge deep connections, fostering a sense of belonging and unity in a world that often feels fragmented.

Does this all sound familiar? Then, you’re probably also used to the negative counterpart of being an empath. In fact, while this can be a beautiful and enriching gift, it is important to acknowledge that there can also be challenges and negative aspects associated with it.

As empaths, in fact, we have a heightened sensitivity to the emotions of others, which means we can easily become overwhelmed by the emotional energy around us. Absorbing and carrying the emotions of others can lead to difficulties in distinguishing our own feelings and in understanding and addressing our own emotional needs.

Anyway, I haven’t made it very far in the book and I may end up putting it down :woman_shrugging:

I’m glad you enjoyed it!

Yeah, I mean, that’s confusing. I used to feel sorry for Scooby and Shaggy being scared when I was a kid. Doesn’t mean I was feeling anything from them!

Yeah, sometimes things like that just set your hair on fire. Best to find something new.

I’m an empath and I cannot ever put into words to explain to another human what that means or how it truly affects me, good and bad. I keep it to myself mostly. I’m reading a book called ā€œThe Empath’s Survival Guideā€ by Judith Orloff, MD and so far, I really like it.

Yeah, I feel like it’s more complicated than it needs to be

I may finish it, or at least skim the rest of it, to see if there’s anything worth taking from the book. If not, it’s getting a rating of DNF from me :woman_shrugging:

I think I’ve heard of that one… I’ll add it to my list. Thank you!

Well, I finished the empath book today :expressionless_face: it wasn’t worth the time it took to read it, if I’m being completely honest. The new reader review post will be up tomorrow and I’ll share a full review lol

I’m sorry that book bombed. Maybe we should start a list of terrible books to watch out for? So no one else has to suffer?
