Challenge Entry - Card Magick

I’ve been drawn to Tarot since I first became interested in wicca 30+ years ago. My first deck was The Witches Tarot by Ellen Cannon Reed published in 1989. I still have the deck more for nostalgia than for reading.

Since then I have collected (and let go) a few decks. I mostly work with tarot and have been practicing my skills in the Monthly Challenges & 2. I am also working my way through the 873-page Holistic Tarot book

When I came back to magick, a friend of mine gifted me an oracle deck. Which was a new concept for me. I appreciated the gift but never really connected to that deck. It wasn’t until I saw the Urban Crow Oracle by MJ Cullinane that I was smitten. I got the original release and the expansion cards.

They were the perfect companion to my Crow Tarot from the same artist.

I would often do a three-card spread with the Crow Tarot and pull one card from the Urban Crow Oracle.

I hadn’t heard of Lenormand until a few years ago and saw it in the forums. I picked up a Scrying Ink Lenomand but didn’t care for the artwork. I was thrilled when one of my favorite tarot artists decided to put out a Petite Lenormand Deck called Tales for Tomorrow (MJ Cullinane.

I have a section of my Tarot/Oracle journal for studying Lenormand card meanings and spreads. (note these are based on worksheets from Labyrinthos' Lenomand Class)

I thought what I would do for the challenge is do the same spread with 4 different decks - tarot, oracle, Lenormand, and gypsy witch fortune telling.

As I was thinking about what question to ask I remembered I had a Tarot Spreads and Journal workbook that I had not worked through yet.

I picked The Whispering Woods :camping:

You find yourself in a dense part of the woods. The wind is blowing through the trees picking up the leaves and swirling them in the air around you. The branches creak and moan as they sway back and forth as filtered light makes its way to the forest floor. When you stop and listen, it sounds as though the woods are whispering to you.

Card 1. Brings a message from the trees. What do you hear? Does it ring true in your ears?

Card 2. You notice young trees pushing their way through in search of light. What area of your life could use some more attention? What needs to be seen?

Card 3. You find yourself focused on one tree to the point the woods seem to disappear. The bark takes on a new look as there is nothing around to compare to it. What are you hyper-focusing on? Do you need to see the bigger picture?

Card 4. The ax appears because the new path is forming: However, you must make room. The brush will not clear itself. What needs to be removed? What is getting in your way or blocking you from moving forward?

Crow Tarot

1. Five of Cups - What I hear while standing in the woods, is this sound of frustration and disappointment. I hear in my head the anger, grief, and guilt that still echo faintly. What I also hear is the whisper that I’ve spent enough time in that place. I can let go and move forward. I see the brighter path ahead. :sunrise_over_mountains:
2. Ace of Cups (Reversed) - The young trees that I notice pushing their way toward the light tell me not to shut myself off from making new connections and to continue to see the beauty and nature and in others. :sun: These young trees tell me that this is who I am and to continue to see the joy and beauty in all the little things around me no matter what comes my way.
3. Four of Pentacles (Reversed) - The tree that I am hyper-focused on is Insecurity and Fear Of Loss, By continuing to stare at this one particular tree, I have forgotten that I can fly. :dove: I have forgotten that I am strong, unstoppable, and capable of succeeding at anything. :muscle:t3:
4. The Tower (Reversed) - What needs to be removed is my hesitation are the brambles :cactus: of My Worry and My Fear. What is getting in the way of this path in front of me is me. I grabbed the ax :axe: confident and strong. And I begin to make my own path forward.

Ok :face_exhaling: that was intense!!! Good, but draining mentally. More than I expected, so I’m off to get in a run to clear my head and will work on the Oracle, Lenormand and Gypsy witch readings later. Goodness, what an experience this has been already!!! :purple_heart:/

I’m gonna pocket this spread for later - this is beautiful!

“The cards, the cards, the cards will tell, the past, the present, the future aswell” Princess & the Frog-Disney.

This is a true statement for me. When I ummd and ahhd over staying in my church or going, card magic took over.

I remember browsing through Amazon. Now this isn’t algorithms as I’d never searched anything witchy since I had first opened my Amazon. Why? I was a committed Christian. So here I am, a few years ago, during COVID just looking for a new book to read, and in my search comes up: Sally Morningstar The Witches Oracle. :face_with_monocle: Weird. I looked at it, and dismissed it. Next day, it popped up again, and again and again and again. And again and again I dismissed it. :triumph:

So I bought a diary instead, a really pretty one, with stars and a moon on the front. Another suggestion from Amazon (Loki is not a god that’s accepts defeat ). When it arrived, I looked at it, it was full of sabbats, herbal tinctures and the like, so I looked where it’d come from. The 2 writers were professors of witchcraft at The College of Psychic Studies. :face_with_monocle:

So I clicked on their website. And the first thing they asked was would I like to subscribe to their courses and I clicked yes. (Or I was pushed into clicking yes, by some invisible god!) My first email from them said: “You haven’t found us, we found you!” :flushed:

So back to Amazon, to find another book to read and there she is, Sally Morningstar, The Witches Oracle but now, she has a friend, Seasons of The Witch Samhain Oracle. So I yielded and bought them.

The Witches Oracle is my daily go to set, even to this day. It’s through these cards, Loki revealed his true self right here on Spells8 (Loki to invite in or no). And it’s through the Season of the Witch that I did all my shadow work to move from one path onto this one, it is still my shadow deck.

I’ve tried many oracles, and they’ve come and they’ve gone. These two are Loki’s go to chit chat deck with me.

For a time, the demon tarot spoke to me, and helped clear up alot of misconceptions in the spirit world. That deck has now left me, and is now with hubby. :person_shrugging::rofl:

But what of tarot. I prefer runes, sorry I do, and so does Loki. However after trying many tarot decks, I thought I’d buy the deck to a favourite TV show- Supernatural. And that’s the deck! It’s got Loki written all over it. It’s a direct, blunt kick up the arse deck. :flushed::partying_face:

So I’ve given away all my other decks, and just stick with this one.

It’s 2024, and I’ve learnt that the gods can manipulate algorithms, make you buy what you don’t want, sign up to a college you’ve never heard of before and follow a spiritual path you didn’t even know existed. Or maybe that’s just the god of chaos.

Loki and I still chat through the runes most days, but it was the cards that he used to ensnare me.

Skoll to the cards. :beers::green_heart:

Tarot has been part of my practice since I’ve started, but I feel like I’m still learning from it every day. I keep a tarot diary to record my spreads, my tarot/oracle deck interviews, tarot challenges, as well as research I’ve done on each card along with my personal interpretations of them. Here are some pages from my tarot diary:

As for the number of decks I have, well, I like to pair my tarot decks with oracle decks so as of now I currently have 3 tarot decks (Shadowscapes, Samiramay, and Mystic Dreams) and 2 oracle decks (The Priestess of Light, and Cardcaptor Sakura Oracle - Pink edition):

I found an oracle deck that I’d like to get to pair with my Mystic Dreams tarot but it’ll have to wait for until 3 more weeks before I can get it. Though, Sakura gets along nicely with it. I will need to contemplate on this matter further before making a final decision :pink_heart: :cherry_blossom:

Challenge Entry part 2 of 4

Urban Crow Oracle

1. Stability - The message from the trees is that there are essential fundamentals that remain in place even when change is happening. Cultivating stability will allow me to endure any challenges I may face.

2. Adventure - The young trees pushing their way towards the light are seeking Adventure. It’s the chance to try different experiences, meet new people, and explore new ideas. Who knows? Let go of expectations and go with the flow.

3. Influence - The tree I’m hyper-focused on has influenced my behavior and my emotions because it became the only thing in my field of view. Shaking my head and clearing my vision, I see the whole forest around me, full of beauty, support and love that makes the first tree fade into the distance.

4. Wrath - The ax in my hand can be used to blindly and recklessly damage anything within reach or it can be used as a precision tool of good to remove obstacles, bad habits, and excuses, to help me clear my path and move forward on the right path. I choose how the ax is used. No one else and I chose to use it in the interests of my greater good.

Tomorrow I will work through Lenormand and the Gypsy Witch Fortune telling decks.

This is my entry: I’ll be using my tarot deck and try to cast a good luck spell using the cup cards surrounding the hand and when it’s done the hand will sit on a picture of me and see what effects I will encounter that week. (All for magical research)

I came across an article the other day on cleansing and blessing a tarot or oracle deck. It was written by Briana Saussy. I loved it so much; I wrote it down in my BOS.

Weekly Challenge Entry

To cleanse your deck with smoke, use Cedar, Juniper, Bay, or White Sage. Pass the cards through the smoke 3 times. As you do this, welcome the cards and the relationship you are going to have with them.

Next, sit or stand with the cards in your hand. Ask the deck of cards the following questions:

  • What is your name?
  • What do I need to know in order to best take care of you?
  • What blessing do you have for me?
  • What blessing will you help me bring to others?
  • Is there anything else I need to know at this time?

Write down the answers you receive and journal on them.

“To Blessed Ones in whom I live, move, and have my being. From you all things emerge and unto You they do return. I ask this day for these cards to be blessed with clarity, love, and wisdom.

I ask for Clarity so that what I see and what I show to others is clear, makes sense, is transparent, accessible, and easy to understand. I ask for Clarity so that these cards work as the mirrors that they truly are – reflecting back to myself and to others the deepest truths which are already and always known by Soul.

I ask for Love so that all messages, all words, all visions received are brought forth in ways that are kind, compassionate, fierce, yet also gentle. I ask for Love so that these cards work as the wellspring that they truly are, delivering the healing waters that restore and bless into our lives even and most especially when the truths we need to hear are harsh and jagged.

I ask for Wisdom so that whatever is given by the cards and taken up by myself or by others is taken up with clarity and love intact and is put to use, practical and direct use, in the ways that are best. I ask for Wisdom so that these cards throw down true and their messages contain accurate descriptions of what is and what is to come but also and more essentially, what is always.

May it be so, amen.”

Once you have blessed the cards, place them in a box or bag that will be their permanent home.

Challenge entry: Card Magick
This was my very first card reading. I did a quick reading/research with the guidance of the book, Tarot for Beginners by Lisa Chamberlain and inspired me to do a 3 spread read for myself. I focused on a general reading about 3 aspects of my life; present, future, and past.
I shuffled my deck 3x and first laid down the center card (present) face down, then on the right for future, then on the left for past. I have the New Era Elements Tarot deck and one side of the cards have the 4 elements. I flipped each card from the water sign (if the sign was on the left, I flipped the card from the left). I did this because from the last weekend divination provided by MeganB I participated in, I remember something along the lines I should challenge myself with the water element and so, I flipped each card by the water element. I first flipped the center (present) drawn upright as I focused on where I’m at today spiritually/mentally. I got Son of Water. Then lead into how my present is going to affect my future which I then flipped the card on the right. Drawn upright and got Knowledge. Then focused on how my present and future was founded or built upon. I got Conflict, upright.
This reading really spoke to me after I read what each card meant from the guide book. Definitely hits the nail on the head of my life.

Don’t mind my cloth please. I’m in the works of buying a new one. You can tell I use my altar a lot :face_with_hand_over_mouth:

I would love to see how you interpret this spread if you were my reader  What do you all think?

Good job Cynnie on your first reading. Don’t worry about your altar cloth. I used to get obsessed about wax and incense ashes on my altar cloths, but not anymore. As you said “you can tell I use my altar a lot”!

I’m definitely getting into the changes of seasons so I’ll definitely be coordinating cloths  this one for sure shows my work though.

Today I’m using Tales for Tomorrow - Petite Lenormand. Not sure how well this will work in this spread but here goes!

1. Clouds - The whispered message from the trees: “Confusion, that which you don’t or can not know is causing you insecurity. By focusing on these clouds, you no longer see the sun”.

2. Man - The trees straining and seeking the light remind me of a person, someone in my life who is going through his own struggles searching for the next step in life. Someone I could help support as they grow and change for this next stage.

3. Scythe - My focus is on the tree in front of me. It’s a potential dramatic change that could lead to another stressful change. It’s all I see, and have seen for a while now. But by focusing on this one tree, I’ve lost sight of the successfully overcome challenges of the past and am discounting the potential for a new and wonderful future. The one tree is not all. It is not everything It is not even real. It’s time to focus on successes of the past and plan for a positive future.

4. Book - The ax in my hand represents knowledge and by examining and learning more about the obstacles in my way, I will find the best way to navigate or remove these brambles and find myself on the path to move forward with confidence.

Weekly Challenge – Card Magick

Using Tarot Cards in Magickal Spells

I like to use tarot cards in my magickal spells. I can represent any intention with one or more cards. For instance, in a spell to bring good luck to my home, I could hang a horseshoe with the points facing up. I could arrange the cards: The Sun, The Magician, and The World in a fan shape and insert them in the cup of the horseshoe. A suitable chant could be:

Good luck shall smile on all we do

By fan of fortune in this shoe

Of all else shall this home be free

As I will so mote it be.

Source: Everyday tarot magic: meditation & spells, 2002, Dorothy Morrison.

If you do not want to remove cards from your deck, photocopy or scan them. I am going to scan these 3 cards and resize them to fit better inside the horseshoe.

If you are on the road and only have your tarot deck, you can set up an altar by representing the goddess with The Moon card, the god with The Sun card, and the elements with The Aces (Pentacles for Earth, Wands for Air, Swords for Fire, and Cups for Water).

In her book, The spellcaster’s handbook (2016), Melanie Marquis had some interesting ways of manipulating the cards during a spell to express her desires:

  • Making a talisman with a card and carry it with you.
  • Reversing a card 180 degrees during a spell to represent a rapid reversal of a situation as you visualize a more desirable outcome.
  • Turning a card face down to end a situation or putting a stop to a particular person or power.
  • Covering one card with another card to symbolize transplanting one energy or circumstance with another.
  • Placing two cards face to face to combine energies or bring something together.
  • Using multiple cards in a progression to symbolize steps to be taken in a plan.
  • Moving cards away from each other or towards each other to signify banishing or attracting.
  • And if you don’t have an ingredient, substituting a tarot card!

Happy spellcasting!

Finally, I am using the Gypsy Witch Fortune Telling Cards.

I feel like these are the least fitting for a spread of this type and appear a bit gimicky or perhaps they are just overly dramatic

1. Crossroads - These trees murmur about an upcoming decision that may lead to a change in path or purpose.

2. Woman - The young trees reaching for the light seem almost familiar. I can identify with their yearning for the light, the search for purpose, and knowledge.

3. Book - The tree I can’t take my gaze away from is the feeling of a spiritual mystery, revelation, expansion, or perhaps new knowledge about to unfold. Feeling that it’s close has narrowed my field of view somewhat and perhaps instead of focusing on pushing it forward or impatiently waiting for it to happen, I should continue my journey and let it unfold in its own time.

4. Heart - Ax in hand and joy in my heart, I need to clear away the thorns of conflicts, the brambles of self-doubt, and the grasping vines of procrastination to make my way forward with love and hope.

Just for fun, I’ll share the many doom and gloom cards.

This deck has more of a novelty feel to me - more like what you think a fortune-telling reading would be like at a traveling carnival.

Ok. I have a lot going on, here.
First, I did my birthday stave spread, similar to the New Year’s spread I shared

https://forum.spells8.com/t/new-years-crest-spread/45805/2

I’m considering making a set of cards based on my staves. They would be easier to replace if they got messed up- being on card stock rather than oversized popsicle sticks. Still, I do not have the materials to make this craft project, and I don’t have access to a store where I can buy them this month.

Then I searched for my tarot birth cards, following

Method 1: Justice
Method 2: Justice and High Priestess-

You are a seeker of truth. You are talented at weighing up a situation and seeing it for what it truly is. You are not bound by rules 100% of the time – instead you have this innate ability to see through the veil and determine what is really going on. You are an intuitive decision-maker, guided by your gut feeling when dealing with challenging situations. You can easily ‘read’ a situation without having all of the information at hand.

Method 3: Personality: Judgement
Soul: High Priestess

With this Tarot Birth Card combination, you may feel at times as if you are not ‘of this world’. You lie somewhere between the spirit world and the earthly world, floating between the veil of consciousness throughout your lifetime. You may feel called to the Spirit world, communicating with those who have passed or being guided by your Spirit Guides. You are an intuitive being.

Finally, I checked out the tarot cards related to horoscope signs:

According to tarot-card reading astrologer Alex Caiola, tarot cards represent the following zodiac signs12:
Aries: The Emperor
Taurus: The Hierophant
Gemini: The Lovers
Cancer: The Chariot
Leo: Strength
Virgo: The Hermit
Libra: Justice
Scorpio: Death

My signs are:
:sun_with_face: Leo- Strength
:last_quarter_moon_with_face: Virgo- Hermit
 Scorpio- Death

This has been quite a learning proposition for me. Lots to put into my BOS defining me. Thank you for the challenge.

Haven’t tried that. I always forget I could seek online for something I could have gotten at Big Lots for 50 cents or $1. I’m still in thrift mode, I guess. Thanks for the reminder.
